ISLAND GUIDE

Phuket travel guide: beaches, islands and viewpoints

Thailand’s largest island has a beach for everyone, from party-friendly Patong to quiet Kata Noi, plus easy boat trips to Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay.

Phuket is the easiest Thai island to reach, with direct flights from around the world and a huge choice of hotels. It’s big (about 50 km long), so choosing the right beach area makes a real difference.

Use Phuket as a base for island-hopping, then enjoy the old town’s colourful Sino-Portuguese streets, sunset viewpoints and excellent seafood.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best beach in Phuket?

For a mix of beauty and convenience, Kata and Kata Noi are favourites. Patong is the busiest. Freedom Beach and Nai Harn are among the prettiest.

Is it safe to swim in Phuket during the rainy season?

Take red flags seriously. From May to October, strong currents on the west coast cause drownings every year. Swim only where lifeguards are on duty.

Phuket or Krabi?

Choose Phuket for more choice of hotels, restaurants and nightlife. Choose Krabi for a quieter, more natural feel and dramatic cliffs.
